Overview
This release delivers a wide range of improvements across the Cosmos Excel Add-In, the Scheduler, and Data Modeling - making it easier to build, troubleshoot, and distribute reports. The updates covered in this article include:
- Focus Mode Now Always Accessible in the Add-In
- Field Source Identification in Field Lookups
- Improved Debug Pane and Previews
- Automatic Report Option Linking
- Batch Sheet Creation in the Add-In
- Dynamic Report Output Naming
- PDF Output Type for Scheduled Jobs
- Quick Map for Data Model Fields
Focus Mode Now Always Accessible in the Add-In
Focus Mode gives you control over how much of a report is visible in the add-in panel at any given time. Previously, this setting was buried several clicks deep in the settings menu, making it cumbersome to toggle — especially when you needed to switch views frequently while building a report. Focus Mode controls are now surfaced directly in the task panel for every report section, so you can switch between views instantly without navigating away from your work.
You can choose from three levels of scope: All shows every item across the entire report, Current Sheet narrows the view to the active sheet, and Current Selection shows only the item tied to the cell you have selected. As you click around your spreadsheet, the panel updates automatically to reflect your current context. Cosmos also remembers your preferred Focus Mode setting across reports, so if you always work in Current Selection, you only need to set it once.
Field Source Identification in Field Lookups
When a report contains multiple tables with similarly named fields — such as Customer Name appearing in more than one place — it can be difficult to know exactly which table a given cell is pulling from. The Field Lookups panel now shows you the full source path for each field, including the table it belongs to. Fields that are directly in the primary table are highlighted with a distinct color and a checkbox indicator, making them easy to distinguish from fields that resolve through a relationship.
When you select multiple cells, the panel displays the source information for all of them simultaneously. This gives you a clear, at-a-glance view of what each field is and where it comes from, reducing the guesswork when reviewing or editing an existing report.
Improved Debug Pane and Previews
Finding and fixing errors in a complex report — one with many sheets, Range Lists, and aggregates — used to require running a full preview and waiting until the problem surfaced mid-run. The Debug pane now includes a Run Check button that scans your report for the most common configuration issues before you run a preview. If everything looks good, you will see a clear confirmation and can proceed. If problems are found, each issue is listed with the specific sheet and cell where the error occurs, and clicking an issue navigates you directly to that location in the workbook.
This debug check also runs automatically whenever you click Run Preview, so you get early feedback without any extra steps. The Previews panel (previously labeled Diagnostics) has also been refreshed with an improved interface and better logging. You can expand each phase of the preview run to see what happened and how long it took, making it much easier to understand report performance at a glance.
Automatic Report Option Linking
Report Options are high-level filters that can apply across an entire report. Adding a new Report Option to an existing, fully built report used to mean manually connecting it to every Range List, aggregate, and other applicable element — a process that could involve hundreds of individual edits. A new Manage Links button is now available in the Report Options panel, giving you the ability to automatically link a new Report Option to all compatible elements in one step.
When you click Manage Links, Cosmos shows you which Report Options exist, which elements are not yet linked, and exactly where the new links will be created. Clicking Create Links applies all of them instantly. This is a significant time-saver for anyone adding a filter — such as a company selector — to a report that was built without one.
Batch Sheet Creation in the Add-In
A Batch Report lets you run a single report for many different parameter values — for example, generating a sales commission report for all 50 salespeople in a single scheduled run. Previously, setting up a Batch Sheet required working outside the Excel add-in. You can now create and configure a Batch Sheet directly from the Batch Reports section of the Cosmos Excel Add-In. If a Batch Sheet does not yet exist for your report, a prompt guides you through creating one on the spot. From there, you can select the target report, configure the schedule parameters, and enter all required values without leaving Excel.
Dynamic Report Output Naming
When Cosmos generates report output files, it previously used a static name based on the report file name — resulting in outputs like Release Example, Release Example 1, Release Example 2, and so on. A new Cosmos Report Name field is now available in the add-in, allowing you to define a dynamic output name using a reference to any cell in your workbook. For example, you can reference a cell containing a salesperson's name combined with a month value, so each output file is named meaningfully and uniquely. This makes it much easier to identify and distribute individual outputs from a batch run.
PDF Output Type for Scheduled Jobs
Scheduled Jobs in the Cosmos Portal can now deliver reports as PDF files in addition to Excel files. When creating or editing a Scheduled Job, you will find a new Output Type field in the Report Configurations section where you can select either Excel or PDF. This has been one of the most frequently requested features in the Cosmos ideas portal, and it gives you greater flexibility when distributing reports to recipients who need a non-editable, print-ready format.
Quick Map for Data Model Fields
When building or extending a table in the Data Model, adding fields one at a time — setting the name, type, and mapping for each — is time-consuming, particularly when you want to bring in many fields from a source table at once. A new Quick Map option is now available on Data Model tables. Clicking Quick Map displays all fields present in the source table that have not yet been added to your model, letting you select the ones you want in bulk. Cosmos automatically applies the correct name, data type, and mapping for each selected field, and adds them all with a single click.
This improvement makes it significantly faster to add new reporting tables from scratch. When you add a new table, select your source, and use Quick Map to pull in all desired fields at once, a complete table can be ready in just a few clicks rather than many minutes of manual configuration.
