Overview

License Types are purchased by your organization and control the type of activities that each Cosmos user can be assigned to. 

This article discusses the two License Types and what each one can do.

License Types are used to differentiate between the two primary types of Cosmos users: Full Users and Lite Users. 

Full Users: These users can be assigned roles to do anything within Cosmos. Full Users can run reports, create and modify reports using the Cosmos Report Editor, make changes to the Data Model, and even take on administrative functions such as adding/removing users and managing user roles. 

Lite Users: These users are only able to run reports and view the finished versions of their report runs. They are typically the most common user type as they cannot change reports, view, or modify anything with the Data Model, or perform any administrative tasks. 

Unlicensed Users: These users are only able to access the tenant administration area to manage environments, users, data sources, and SharePoint sites. These users don't require a Cosmos licensed to be purchased for them but, due to the administrative nature of the role, they cannot access any Cosmos environment. They would need to have a Full or Lite license type assigned to them to be able to access any environments.

While the License Type determines the type of activity that each user can have, it is important to note that users can only perform the actions that are included in the roles that are assigned to them by their Cosmos Administrator. Just because a user is a Full User does not mean they will be able to do all the actions listed above; if they have only been assigned the Report Editor role, they will not be able to change anything in the Data Model or manage users even though they are a Full User.
