Overview
Sometimes the default naming of tables and fields in Cosmos may not align with the terms used within the business, or business users may want to see things named differently. This article covers how to rename tables, fields, and relationships in the Data Model.
Details
To rename tables, fields, or relationships in the Data Model, you will navigate to the Data Model section of the Cosmos Portal and check out the data model.
Next, navigate to the Reporting Tables section, go to the table, field, or relationship that you wish to rename, and click either the Edit button to rename a table or click on the the pencil icon to edit the name of a field or relationship.
This will open the window where you will rename the item. Type in the name that you want the item to have and click the Save button for the changes to be saved.
The same steps are taken to rename tables, fields, and relationships in the Data Model.
Once you are finished renaming the things that you want to change you will check in your extension and then click the Publish Pipeline button for the changes to be saved. Your users will then see these table, field, and relationship names updated in both the Cosmos Report Editor Excel add-in as well as in Power BI.
Cosmos reports that are built in Excel will not be impacted by changing the names of the tables and fields and will continue to run as expected.
Due to how Power BI reads data from its data sources, if a table or field is renamed that is currently used in Power BI reports, those reports will need to be updated as Power BI will continue looking for the old name.
